Toppers date back to the 1890s. According to the article, “Bride and Groom Wedding Cake Toppers,” the first toppers were made from gum paste and plaster. By the 1920s, they were a hit with high society. The first commercially manufactured toppers were made from glass, paper and wood. In 1924, a U.S. wholesale catalog sold wax toppers, and by 1927, the Sears Roebuck catalog was devoting an entire page to wedding toppers. Slack Manufacturing began selling celluloid toppers in 1928. By the ’50s, toppers were a must-have item for bridal couples.
